June 7, 2015 - Class of 2050 (part 1) (Fiction)

Maxine McKennie (Student, class of 2050)

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. High school is over. I just got accepted into UC Berkeley and I think it's going to be amazing. I haven't declared a major just yet though. Mom used to tell me that when she was growing up it was really tough to attend college with the high cost of tuition. I'm glad that I don't have to pay back those immense student loans. Supposedly my grandfather owed $100,000! I'm glad the government was able to forgive the rest of his debt.

My grandparents were born in the 1980s, when they were adults things were starting to get worse. My grandpa told me that his parents took him to New York City when he was a young boy and he saw the World Trade Centers before they were attacked and destroyed. My parents grew up in a world that was changing and the more I think about it, the more frustrated I become. How did my great-grandparents generation let this happen?

But on that note, my parents don't have a particularly good taste in music or movies. Anything from the 20th century is just so disgusting. So excessive!!!

I checked the news today on Ultra, I don't normally do. But, I noticed the headlines. They say we only have ten years left of fossil fuels. Funny, when I was born, America seemed to never want to give up oil. It makes me wonder how many millions had to die before the world had to changed. My grandparents are happy that I got into UCB, they want to get out of Los Angeles as soon as possible but they don't want to do it until they can retire in another ten years.

I've been thinking alot about Michael, I wish he were here to see me go to UCB. But he's busy at studying in New Delhi. He really wants to be ahead of everyone. India is ruling the world right now. One of the things keeping me from becoming a business major is learning Hindi. I am perfectly fine with english, french and spanish.

I'm caught between architecture, engineering or sociology as a major. I really want to study all the different cultures we have, but I always want to build the infrastructure of the future. Just thinking out loud, I guess. It's tough.
